Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of short bowel syndrome (SIC) is 2-5 cases per million, being more frequent in women. Survival of patients with SIC in parenteral nutrition is 86% at 2 years and 75% at 5 years. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study with patients with SIC attended the last 5 years (2009-2014) in the General Surgery Service of "Hospital de Especialidades Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente (HECMNO)" to determine morbidity and mortality in these patients. Descriptive statistics were performed with the SPSS v15 program for Windows, using measures of central tendency and dispersion. Results: 17 patients were included of which 10 (41%) were women, and the mean age was 46.7 14.6 years. Overall morbidity occurred in 70% of patients and overall mortality at 10.1 months was 18%.
