Abstract
The Os Peroneum is an accessory bone (ossicle) located within the tendon of the peroneus longus muscle and on the lateral aspect of the cuboid bone. It is present in approximately 25% to 30% of the population and can be bipartite or multipartite. The Os Peroneum protects the peroneus longus muscle from stress injuries. It is generally asymptomatic, but it can also cause lateral plantar pain secondary to fractures. Due to its intratendinous location, it can contribute to inflammation. It is also important to know that other causes of lateral midfoot pain include ligamentous injuries, fractures of the base of the 4th and 5th metatarsals, anterior calcaneus, and cuboid bone. X-rays are the first step in pain evaluation, allowing visualization of the morphology and location of the os peroneum, especially in oblique views.
